Although both Joe and Nida continue to be very much involved in all the family businesses, their daughter Erin now manages the Chesapeake Landing Restaurant, while his other son, Joe Spurry, Jr. handles the day to day operation of Bay Hundred Seafood. Many other family members have also worked at various times in the family businesses over the years and the Spurrys continue to maintain a dedicated staff of long time employees, some of whom have been working with the Spurry family since the very beginning.
With a seafood market and carry-out located right inside the restaurant, customers are also able to pick up and take home some of their favorites from the menu or the seafood display case seven days a week - all year round. Crabs are always available in season and the market is fully stocked with fresh picked Miles River Brand crabmeat, oysters (shucked or still in the shell), mussels, clams, shrimp, locally caught fish and many other seafood delicacies.
Bay Hundred Seafood delivers its own Miles River Brand crabmeat & oysters to local businesses up and down the east coast as well as the entire Delmarva Peninsula. Locally they deliver fresh seafood every day to locations in Easton, St. Michael’s, Tilghman Island, Kent Island, Oxford, Wye Mills, Denton, Chestertown, Centreville, Rock Hall, Queenstown, Grasonville, Stevensville, Vienna, Cambridge and other locations in Caroline County, Queen Anne’s County, Kent County, Dorchester County on Maryland’s upper eastern shore, as well as into Sussex County, Delaware. On the lower shore they also deliver to locations in Salisbury, and Ocean City in Worcester County, Wicomico County and Somerset County, MD.
Having the Bay Hundred Seafood processing plant located on the same property as the Chesapeake Landing Restaurant and Seafood Market also allows their kitchen a unique ability to serve up some of the freshest seafood dishes you will find just about anywhere in the world. In fact, when it comes to entrees and appetizers made with fresh lump backfin crabmeat, shucked oysters or locally caught fish and other seafood, it really can’t get much fresher than what is brought to your table at the Chesapeake Landing Restaurant and Seafood Market.
Building the restaurant back in 1991 also enabled Joe to fulfill another dream of having his whole family working together in the seafood business. From the moment he first broke ground on the restaurant, virtually everyone became involved in the new family enterprise. Joe’s son Guy, who still works as a full time waterman on the Chesapeake Bay, assisted in the actual construction of the building.
Joe’s wife Nida, was instrumental in everything from establishing the decor of the dining rooms to choosing which seafood specialties would be on the lunch and dinner menus and all the while encouraging the warm family friendly atmosphere that still carries on to this day.
When Joe started Bay Hundred Seafood back in 1984, he purchased one of the last locally operating seafood processing plants in all of Delmarva. (Originally, the term “Bay Hundred” referred to the part of the Talbot County that stretched between Tilghman Point at the mouth of the Miles River to Tilghman Island at the mouth of the Choptank River. However, today it more often refers to the entire riverfront region along Maryland Rt. 33 in Talbot County between Easton, MD and Tilghman Island.) The seafood processing plant that Mr. Spurry took over in the center of the Bay Hundred region was in danger of being shut down at the time. But, Mr. Spurry saw an opportunity to do more than just sell fresh picked crabmeat and oysters to vendors up and down the Atlantic coast. By working hand in hand with about 40 - 50 local watermen throughout the year, and by personally traveling the entire east coast to find new places to ship to, or purchase from, he was soon able to expand his wholesale seafood business to include much more in the way of live crabs and oysters. Today, just about everything shucked or picked and processed at Bay Hundred Seafood is packaged under the Spurry’s own Miles River Brand label.
It was over 24 years ago that Joe and Nida Spurry proudly opened the doors of their Chesapeake Landing Restaurant and Seafood Market to the general public. Since then, this family run business has firmly established a strong reputation for serving up some of the best seafood dishes in the Mid Atlantic. Located about 2 ½ miles west of St. Michael’s, Maryland, the Chesapeake Landing Restaurant and Seafood Market is much more than just another local Eastern Shore crab house. All of their steaks, beef and ½ lb. burgers are guaranteed Certified Angus Beef®. Their complete dinner menu also includes several popular chicken, baby back ribs and alfredo dishes, too. They even have a fully stocked fresh seafood market and carry out inside the restaurant that is also open 7 days a week.
In the early 1980’s, Joe Spurry Sr. was making a pretty good living as a crabber on the waterways of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Joe, who comes from a long line of Chesapeake Bay crabbers and watermen, was bringing in so many crabs at that time that he couldn't sell them all locally. So, he started delivering a lot of his extras in nearby Annapolis and Baltimore, MD. It wasn’t long before the demand for good local Maryland seafood went through the roof and Joe eventually sold his boat and gave up crabbing to focus on his growing distribution business.
The Chesapeake Landing Restaurant and Seafood Market is open all year round and will ship many of their most popular seafood items such crabcakes, crabmeat, or shucked oysters to just about anywhere in the USA.
